R102 construction moves into ‘slow lane’ in Umtentweni

The community is concerned with rehabilitation delays from Port Shepstone to Umzumbe.

Concerns have been raised over the snail-paced rehabilitation of the R102, from the Mzimkhulu River bridge to Umzumbe.

Construction commenced seven months ago, however, little progress is reflected.

“The media recently quoted the MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma as stating that the bridge will be accessible for single-lane traffic by mid-November. Yet, one must question the feasibility of such an arrangement, if the R102 remains incomplete,” said Nazir Shaikh, chairperson of the North Cluster Residents’ and Ratepayers’ Association.

Umtentweni resident Bill Stephans said the summer holiday is drawing near, yet no work is currently being undertaken from the Rethman Drive traffic lights to the bridge. “Why is there a delay? “he asked.

Meanwhile, traffic has been diverted, with light motor vehicles using Link Road and heavy motor vehicles directed to Commercial Road.

The Department of Transport was contacted for comment, however, at the time of going to press none was received.
