The Department of Public Works and Infrastructure was seeking more than R53 billion in debt financing to get four major infrastructure projects off the ground.

The projects span housing, aviation, bulk water and energy infrastructure and have been pitched to local and international development finance institutions and multilateral development banks.

The investment opportunities were presented at Infrastructure South Africa's Development Partners Forum in Sandton, chaired by Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Dean Macpherson.

Infrastructure South Africa is currently providing project-preparation support to more than 26 infrastructure projects with an estimated combined capital value of R148 billion.

Fifteen projects have already completed their preparatory work.

Following the latest investment pitches, Infrastructure South Africa will facilitate further engagements between project sponsors and interested financiers.

These will focus on transaction structuring, financing participation, risk allocation and the steps required to reach financial close.

Macpherson said the ultimate measure of success would be whether the projects moved from investment pitches to actual construction, adding government could not fund the country's infrastructure ambitions through the fiscus alone.

This comes as the latest GDP print shows gross fixed investment shrank by 1.1% in the first quarter of 2026, while the construction sector has recorded negative annual growth since 2018.
