Johannesburg Roads Agency has completed the long-awaited repairs on President Fouché Drive. Councillor Ralf Bittkau confirmed the road’s reopening and urged focus on fixing others
After weeks of delays, frustration, and uncertainty, President Fouché Drive has finally reopened, much to the relief of motorists and residents in the area.
Ward 101 councillor Ralf Bittkau confirmed the long-awaited update, saying: “As a lot of people would say, today is a good day. The road is open and I think, same as me, everybody is going to be rejoicing.
“It is absolutely unbelievable that we got it going, at last, and how quickly it was sorted today, after the little changes made overnight. Thank you, everybody, for your patience.
“All I can say is, thank goodness this one is open. Now, let’s work on CR Swart and all the others, and we’ll get there.”
In an official statement, Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) announced: “JRA is pleased to inform the public that the road works on President Fouché Drive, between CR Swart Drive and Kelly Avenue in Bromhof (Region C), have been completed, and the road is now fully re-opened to traffic.”
A full road closure was implemented on April 10, for Johannesburg Water to repair a burst water pipe, diverting traffic to Kowie, Tin, and Kelly roads. JRA has now completed the road reinstatement and pothole repairs.
This marks a small, but significant, victory for service delivery in the area. The initial repair delays drew public criticism, leading to residents removing barriers and using the road illegally out of frustration. With the road now reopened, focus shifts to other key routes in need of maintenance, including CR Swart Drive.
