"The local depot, which caters for numerous wards, does not have the necessary equipment, resources and material to tend to the potholes in Edenvale."

Edenvale’s roads are pockmarked with potholes; they scar the town’s roads like wounds, affecting motorists and residents alike.

In recent weeks, local ward councillors and non-profit organisation Better Edenvale have highlighted the poor condition of the roads, drawing attention to the danger and damage the potholes cause to motorists’ vehicles.

Ward 19 Ald Bill Rundle shows the deterioration and erosion of the road surface along Third Avenue.

Although some of the town’s main thoroughfares, such as Homestead Road and Horwoods Street, have recently been resurfaced, many of the Avenues and remaining streets and roads in town remain lined with potholes.

Ward 19 Ald Bill Rundle explained that the increase in the number of potholes stemmed from a lack of maintenance and repairs by the roads department.

Taking a tour through the Avenues with Rundle, the News documented countless potholes both in wards 18 and 19.

According to Rundle, some of the worst-affected roads in the Avenues area were Third, Fourth and Fifth avenues.

He added that although Baker Road was reportedly scheduled for resurfacing, it remains heavily affected by potholes.

A member of one of the local ward committees informed the News that after Homestead Road and Horwood Street were resurfaced, there was not enough tar to resurface Baker Road.

Rundle explained that a lack of road maintenance throughout Edenvale has led to the deterioration of road surfaces, creating conditions that allow potholes to develop.

He added that the growth of grass and weeds along road verges also contributes to the problem, as it redirects rainwater and runoff onto the road surface instead of allowing it to flow into stormwater drains, where it is intended to be channelled.

“Another problem contributing to the issue is the fact that many residents in the Avenues have their runoff pipes for their pools leading directly onto the roads,” said Rundle.

He explained that the additional water and chemicals from the pools deteriorate the roads further.
Rundle said one of the biggest reasons why potholes are not being repaired is that the city lacks the necessary funds.

“The city cannot pay the service providers,” explained Rundle. “Additionally, the local depot, which caters for numerous wards, does not have the necessary equipment, resources and materials to tend to the potholes in Edenvale,” said Rundle.

Rundle said another contributing factor was the limited number of operational vehicles available, which he believes has hampered maintenance efforts and contributed to the deterioration of the roads.

“With so many challenges, it raises the question of how the municipality and road depot operate,” said Rundle.
