Port of Durban’s Bayhead Road upgrade gets under way

Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) started its critical six-month rehabilitation work on Bayhead Road in the Port of Durban this week.

The project aims to reduce congestion, improve road safety, and support seamless cargo movement at the port.

“Bayhead Road is one of South Africa’s busiest roads transporting cargo to and from the major container terminals and the Island View port precinct,” said Port of Durban Acting Port Manager, Nkumbuzi Ben-Mazwi.

“The ports authority acknowledges the disruption construction will cause and a traffic management plan has been prepared to minimise traffic congestion to ensure smooth operations during construction.”

Handling an estimated 13 000 vehicles daily, nearly half of them heavy trucks, Bayhead Road has suffered significant wear and tear, resulting in bottlenecks and safety risks.

The scope of works includes milling the existing asphalt, laying new asphalt on both carriageways, repairing stormwater structures, installing road signs, and providing clear road markings. These upgrades will reinforce the road’s structural integrity and enhance operational resilience across the port precinct.

During the construction period, TNPA has pledged to maintain traffic flow through phased lane closures, alternative routes, and a robust traffic management plan featuring clear signage and traffic officials to guide motorists safely through the affected zones.

TNPA said it was also engaging closely with port users, industry associations, and law enforcement authorities to coordinate efforts and minimise disruption.

“TNPA is committed to minimising disruptions during the construction period and appreciates the cooperation and understanding of road and port users,” Ben-Mazwi said.

The rehabilitation initiative responds to longstanding industry calls for road infrastructure improvements to keep supply chains moving efficiently.
