Construction to convert the busy Sunset Avenue and Forest Drive intersection into a traffic circle is underway, aiming to ease congestion and improve pedestrian safety by September
Construction is officially underway to transform the busy intersection of Sunset Avenue and Forest Drive into a traffic circle, aiming to reduce congestion and improve pedestrian safety in the Pineslopes area.
The project, led by Pineslopes Boulevard in partnership with the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA), will replace the current multi-way stop with a traffic circle and raised pedestrian crossings to improve traffic flow and safety.

The circle will allow vehicles to yield and merge smoothly rather than stop completely, reducing queues and delays while improving fuel efficiency. The design also reduces the risk of high-speed collisions, with the curved layout and raised pedestrian crossings naturally slowing traffic and improving visibility for drivers and pedestrians.
Sipho Nhlapo, the acting HOD: Mobility and Freight at JRA, explained, “The introduction of the traffic circle at this key intersection will help address congestion by improving traffic flow and reducing waiting times, while also prioritising pedestrian safety. This is part of our commitment to building safer, more efficient roads for our communities.”
Construction, which began on 1 July, is expected to be completed by 30 September this year, with Pineslopes Boulevard Centre management assuring residents and businesses that regular updates will be provided. Eskom has announced a planned power outage for part of the day on July 21 to relocate a power cable linked to the project, and residents are encouraged to plan accordingly.
JRA employees work on the traffic circle project at Sunset Avenue and Forest Drive in Pineslopes.
Motorists can expect stop-and-go traffic control on Forest Drive during the installation of the raised pedestrian crossing and speed table, while Sunset Avenue will remain open throughout construction, with the entrance to Pineslopes Boulevard accessible, although temporary restrictions may apply.
Nhlapo confirmed that all roadworks will adhere to strict safety measures to protect motorists, pedestrians, and workers. Traffic during the stop-and-go periods will be closely monitored, with the contractor, JMPD, and JRA working together to adjust traffic control measures as needed to minimise disruptions.
“Upon completion, new signage will be installed along Sunset Avenue and Forest Drive to reflect the change in traffic control, bringing long-term improvements to traffic flow and safety for the Pineslopes community.”
Motorists and pedestrians are encouraged to remain patient during the construction period as the new circle is expected to significantly improve daily commutes in the area once completed.
