Pikitup to improve landfill sites

pikitup, waste management utility for the city of johannesburg, is upgrading its landfill sites.

the company has implemented a five year programme, which has been approved by the department of water affairs and forestry, to upgrade all its landfill facilities.

a capital budget of r11.9m has been approved for this purpose.

the upgrading of the sites includes improvements to stormwater drainage and water pollution monitoring, capping of sites, rehabilitation of slopes, improved access control to the landfills including weighbridge control, booms and paving, fencing and an upgrade of the general infrastructure.

pikitup owns and operates five landfill sites in the area stretching from midrand in the north to orange farm in the south west, including linbro park, robinson deep, goudkoppies and ennerdale.

pikitup is also responsible forthe management of the company`s incinerator and medical waste collection service. pikitup`s medical waste collection section operates four specialised vehicles collecting medical waste from various hospitals, clinics, doctors and veterinarians, transporting it to be incinerated.
