Certain communities in Nelson Mandela Bay could be without water for several days while the Department of Water and Sanitation carries out much-needed upgrades to the Sundays River Canal.

This is after the canal was damaged in 2017 and a temporary structure was subsequently erected, which was on the verge of collapsing, and saw the permanent construction of the canal.

These repairs commenced in July last year.

The city’s political head for Infrastructure and Engineering, Buyelwa Mafaya, who was accompanied by the City’s acting executive director for her directorate Joseph Tsatsire says the planned water disruption is set to take place from the 9th to the 13th of May.

“We have prepared water tankers to go to the communities who will be most affected by the shutdown,” she adds.

Furthermore, she asked residents to use water sparingly during this time.

Motherwell, Wells Estate, Bluewater Bay, parts of Chatty, Kariega, and Despatch, Kwa Dwesi, Bethelsdorp and parts of Govan Mbeki will be the most affected by the shutdown.

While the repairs are being done, daily water will be reduced from 210 megalitres to 70 megalitres.

Meanwhile, Tsatsire echoed Mafaya’s plea to use water sparingly.

“There is a lot of planning that is being done in the background, and we have budgeted for the availability of emergency resources if a problem arises,” he said.
