The Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) said the mammoth R4.6 billion reconstruction of Parliament is on track for completion next year and is running within budget.
On Friday, Parliamentarians were taken on a site visit of the new National Assembly building for a first-hand inspection of the new chamber that will be able to accommodate 1,200 people.
The DBSA said that with construction now 76% complete, Parliament will be able to host next year’s State of the Nation Address and the tabling of the national budget in the new-look chamber.
Following the 2022 fire that gutted both Parliament’s old and new National Assembly chambers, contractors say they had to contend with several environmental and heritage factors that set the project timeline back by around four months.
This included a stubborn bedrock and the natural underground streams that run beneath the buildings.
Security vetting for construction workers also added to the delays.
But DBSA executive for infrastructure, Chuene Ramphele, has told Parliament the hurdles are now behind them.
"The heritage, the asbestos had a very serious impact in terms of the four months [delay], work that we needed to do. That necessitated us to look at the contractual extension of the time, but we are confident the progress continues in that regard. "
He said the price tag includes all demolition work and the construction of new offices for MPs in another Parliamentary building.
"At this point in time, we have no cost overruns. We are sitting at 52 per cent of the expenditure."
The completion date for the entire project remains June 2027.
