Motorists are advised of upcoming road closures as the N3 upgrades demolition team claim another bridge, old Candella Road Bridge.

Motorists travelling on the N3 near Durban are advised to plan, as temporary road closures will be implemented on Saturday to allow for the demolition of the old Candella Road Bridge.

The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (Sanral) said the closures form part of the ongoing upgrade of the EB Cloete Interchange, also known as Spaghetti Junction, and surrounding road infrastructure.

“Where municipal roads such as Candella Road are affected by the N2 or N3 upgrades, the affected portions are built to match the city’s future planning,” said Sanral’s KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Specialist Geometrics Engineer Jason Lowe.

When closures take place

Sanral said both the eastbound and westbound carriageways of the N3 will be fully closed between the EB Cloete Interchange and the Sherwood Interchange from 6pm on Saturday until 4am on Monday.

The agency confirmed that the N2 will remain fully open, as will the N3 on the inland side of the EB Cloete Interchange.

Full traffic accommodation plans will be in place to ensure the safety of both road users and construction teams.

Specific closure locations

N3 at Sherwood Interchange:

  • N3 westbound (Durban to Pinetown): carriageway fully closed. Vehicles may only proceed down the Sherwood Interchange off-ramp.
  • Sherwood westbound on-ramp to the N3 (Sherwood/Cato Manor to Pinetown): ramp fully closed. Vehicles may only proceed along the M13 King Cetshwayo Highway or to the N3 eastbound.

Closures at EB Cloete (Spaghetti Junction) N3/N2 Interchange:

  • N2 southbound ramp to N3 eastbound (King Shaka International Airport to Durban): ramp fully closed. Vehicles may only proceed to the N2 south or N3 west.
  • N3 eastbound (Pinetown to Durban): carriageway fully closed. Vehicles may only proceed to the N2 north (Umhlanga/King Shaka International Airport) or south (Amanzimtoti).
  • N2 northbound ramp to N3 eastbound (Amanzimtoti to Durban): ramp fully closed. Vehicles may only proceed to the N2 north or N3 west.

Advice to motorists

SANRAL has advised trucks and heavy vehicles to delay travel during the closure period where possible, find suitable staging areas, or make use of alternative routes to avoid congestion.

Public transport operators have been asked to ensure drivers are aware of the closures and available detours affecting commuter routes.

“All road-users are advised to plan their routes ahead of time and, where possible, leave for destinations earlier than usual,” Sanral said.

A detailed alternative route guide has been provided and can be accessed on Sanral’s website.

“To prioritise the safety of both the construction workers and road users, the speed limit along the route is reduced during construction,” Lowe said.

Sanral thanked road users for their patience and cooperation as work continues to alleviate long-term traffic congestion in the area.
