Significant infrastructure improvements are underway along Plantation Road between Wetton and Ferness Roads, with the City of Cape Town’s road resurfacing project scheduled for completion by late November.
The comprehensive upgrade involves both daytime and nighttime work cycles, representing one of the area’s most substantial infrastructure investments this year.
According to the latest update from the City of Cape Town, the multi-faceted project includes complete road resurfacing, kerb and channel replacements, and enhanced road markings designed to improve safety and visibility.
The work forms part of the City’s ongoing commitment to maintaining and upgrading Cape Town’s road network while creating employment opportunities for local residents.
The project employs a dual-shift system to accelerate progress, with work occurring between 9am and 3:30pm daily from Sunday to Friday, complemented by nighttime operations from 8pm until 4:30am. This schedule aims to minimise disruption while ensuring timely completion of what officials describe as essential infrastructure maintenance.
Councillor Rob Quintas, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, acknowledged the community’s cooperation during the construction period.
‘Thank you to all the residents, road users and business owners in Ottery for their patience and cooperation during the course of these roadworks,’ he stated. ‘The City’s Roads Infrastructure Management team is working hard to keep Cape Town moving on good quality roads.’
The scope of work encompasses several critical improvements, including the ‘removal and reinstatement of plastic bollards’ and comprehensive ‘repairing of the southbound lane between Bamboesvlei Road and Furness Road.’ These measures are designed to address long-term wear and tear while implementing modern safety standards.
An important community benefit highlighted by Councillor Quintas involves local employment opportunities.
‘I am also pleased to see a few locals, who are registered on the job seekers’ database, working on this project,’ he noted, encouraging other unemployed residents to visit their local Subcouncil offices to register on the City’s jobseeker database.
Motorists using the Plantation Road corridor should anticipate partial lane closures throughout the project duration. Transportation officials recommend that drivers to beat the traffic, plan ahead and consider using a different route. during peak traffic periods.
The infrastructure improvements align with the City’s broader strategy of maintaining Cape Town’s road network to ensure safety, reduce vehicle maintenance costs for residents, and support efficient transportation flow throughout the metropolitan area.
