Yet another periodic maintenance project by the Western Cape Department of Infrastructure (DOI) has been completed.

“This 16-month, R95.5 million project was to do periodic maintenance on three roads near Wellington and Malmesbury,” said Jandré Bakker, DOI Director: Operational Support. “The portions of road that were repaired and resealed included 12.2 km of Divisional Road (DR) 01123 (Slent Road), 14.4 km of Main Road (MR) 174 (the R302), and a total of 4.4 km of Trunk Road (TR) 02501," he added.

“The work on DR01123 included base repairs to a depth of 160 mm as well as surface repairs on distressed portions of road. We also installed subsoil drains, regravelled eroded road shoulders and were tasked with the rehabilitation of one culvert. Other work included remedial work to structures, drainage structures and roadside furniture as well as resealing the road,” he continued.

“The work on MR174 included surface and base repairs to distressed portions of road, the regravelling of eroded road shoulders, remedial work to structures, drainage structures and roadside furniture and resealing the road,” he continued. 

The work on TR2501 included surface repairs to distressed portions of road, the regravelling of eroded road shoulders, remedial work to structures, drainage structures and roadside furniture and resealing the road.

“The project created 150 short-term work opportunities, which was on target according to the contract participation goals we set for this project,” said Western Cape Minister of Infrastructure Tertuis Simmers. 

"We created 15 000 person-days of work against a target of 6425 and R11.6 million was spent on procuring goods and services from targeted enterprises against a target of R8.9 million with nine local enterprises and three emerging contractors benefitting from the project,” Minister Simmers added.

“Periodic maintenance is a crucial part of our strategy to extend the life of our road network. It reduces the need for other interventions like pothole repairs and with roads being a very costly asset to replace, contributes to having a functional road network within a very limited fiscal envelope. It is now up to the road users to use the road responsibly,” Minister Simmers concluded.
