The North West Department of Education, has officially handed over a contractor for the construction of a new School of Autism in Dinokana Village, Zeerust, under the , marking a major milestone in expanding inclusive education infrastructure in the province.
The project, led by MEC Ntsetsao Viola Motsumi, is expected to provide specialised, dignified and fully supported learning environments for learners with Autism Spectrum Disorder and other neurodevelopmental conditions.
Speaking at the official contractor handover, MEC Motsumi said the project represents a turning point for families who have long struggled to access appropriate schooling for their children.
“Today we turn the sod on hope. Every child, regardless of ability, has the right to education that respects their dignity and unlocks their potential.”
She added that the new facility will directly address long-standing gaps in access within the region.
“For too long, families in Zeerust had to choose between no schooling or travelling far from home. The School of Autism in Dinokana changes that narrative. This is about inclusion, early intervention, and giving these learners the support they deserve to thrive.”
The proposed school will include Early Childhood Development (ECD), Foundation, Intermediate and Senior Phase classrooms, vocational training workshops, therapy and wellness units, as well as library, kitchen, dining, and administrative facilities. It will also incorporate accessibility-driven design features and learner support services.
MEC Motsumi emphasised that the project is rooted in care and responsibility toward families and caregivers.
“To parents and caregivers: We see you. We hear you. This school is built for your children. Our educators and therapists will be trained to provide specialised support. No child must be left behind.”
With the contractor now officially on site, construction will commence immediately under strict monitoring by the Department’s Infrastructure Unit to ensure quality, compliance with universal design standards, and timely delivery.
Officials confirmed that the project aligns with Education White Paper 6 on Inclusive Education, which promotes expanded access for learners with special educational needs across South Africa.
The Department says the Dinokana School of Autism forms part of a broader provincial strategy to expand special needs education infrastructure and improve access to quality learning environments for all learners, regardless of ability.
Traditional leadership, local councillors, School Governing Body representatives, and parents from the community attended the handover ceremony, underscoring strong community support for the initiative.
