Soshanguve Block L gets major road and stormwater upgrades, promising safer streets, better drainage, and new local jobs.
Residents of Soshanguve Block L can look forward to improved infrastructure and better living conditions as the Tshwane metro officially launched the long-awaited Area 3 Roads and Stormwater Infrastructure Project.
The initiative marks a major step in addressing years of poor road conditions, flooding, and limited accessibility in wards 35 and 36.
The project, spearheaded by MMC for Roads and Transport, Tlangi Mogale, forms part of the metro’s commitment to reinstating previously terminated infrastructure projects and delivering on promises made to local communities.
Mogale highlighted the importance of the development in transforming the daily lives of residents.
“This project represents a major step forward in addressing long-standing infrastructure challenges.
“For too long, residents have had to endure gravel roads, poor accessibility, and flooding during rainy seasons,” she said.
The scope of the project is extensive and includes the construction of 2km of new tarred roads, 2km of stormwater drainage infrastructure, and 2km of sidewalks.
These upgrades are expected to significantly improve mobility, road safety, and drainage in the area, particularly during heavy rains when flooding has historically been a major concern.
Beyond infrastructure, the project is also set to bring much-needed economic opportunities to the local community.
Mogale said about 100 general workers will be employed during the construction phase, providing temporary jobs and skills development.
She said Community Liaison Officers have already been appointed to ensure smooth communication between the city, contractors, and residents.
“Local small businesses are also expected to benefit, with opportunities created for small and medium enterprises in various sectors, including security services, plant hire, material supply, and the construction of kerbs, sidewalks, manholes, and junction boxes.
“This approach aligns with the metro’s broader goal of stimulating local economic growth while delivering essential services,” said Mogale.
With a total investment of R38.4-million (excluding VAT), the project officially commenced on March 9 and is scheduled for completion by July 9, 2027.
Mogale said the timeline reflects the scale of the work required to fully upgrade the infrastructure and ensure long-term sustainability.
She also called on residents to play an active role in supporting the project.
“We would like the community to work together with the metro to make this project a success, building not only roads, but a stronger and more connected future for Soshanguve,” she said.
