Construction on the Standerton Mall is progressing well and will provide the town with a new 17,000-square-meter retail destination.
Standerton was founded in 1878 on a farm called Grootverlangen and named after its owner, Commandant Adriaan Henrik Stander.
Over the last 150 years, it has become a prominent commercial, agricultural, and industrial town on the banks of the Vaal River in the Mpumalanga Highveld.
It serves as the administrative seat of the Lekwa Local Municipality and as a critical economic hub in the region.
Standerton connects Gauteng’s industrial heartland with the port of Durban via major transport networks.
The town is at the centre of a productive mixed-farming district with large-scale cultivation of maize, sunflower seeds, groundnuts, and potatoes.
To support growing commerce in the region, the town will get a new shopping centre, called the Standerton Mall.
Construction on the Standerton Mall started last year, and it is making good progress to launch next year.
The shopping mall is located on a main road near one of Standerton’s entrances and is designed for ease of use.
The centre allows shoppers to park directly in front of the specific stores they want to visit, a setup intended to enhance accessibility.
Confirmed tenants for the development include Checkers, Woolworths, Superspar, Dis-Chem, Truworths, Foschini, Jet, TotalSports, and Mr Price Home.
The Standerton Mall will also feature a Capitec Bank, Spec-Savers, Petshop Science, Gadget and Cell, Spar Tops, and The Daily Coffee Café.
Oversight visit to the Standerton Mall
In April 2026, MMC for Planning and Economic Development, Councillor Sesana Masondo, visited the construction site of the Standerton Mall.
This oversight visit by the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Planning and Economic Development was to assess progress on the development.
The visit formed part of the municipality’s ongoing commitment to monitor key infrastructure and economic development projects.
These key infrastructure and economic development projects aim to boost local growth and improve service delivery.
“The Standerton Mall development is a significant investment in the local economy,” Masondo said in a statement.
“It is expected to create job opportunities, enhance retail offerings, and contribute to the revitalisation of the area.”
According to the latest project update, construction is progressing steadily, with an estimated completion date of February 2027.
Masondo was satisfied with the progress and emphasised the importance of maintaining momentum to ensure timely delivery.
“This development is a major step forward for Standerton. It will improve access to retail services and stimulate economic activity and job creation,” he said.
