THE construction of a R200m shopping complex in Marite village, Bushbuckridge will create more than 500 jobs for the locals. The authorities did not divulge when the building of the complex would begin as they were still holding meetings.
Marite-based chief Lameck Mokoena yesterday confirmed that the new shopping complex application that lasted 8 years had been finally approved.
“I can confirm that our application for the construction of the new mall has been approved. We are very happy about the approval because many people will get jobs and be able to take care of their families. This will be a turning point for Marite – residents will no longer have to travel long distances to shop.
“The reason why it took so long for approval of the development is that some people opposed the construction on the grounds that they had buried their loved ones at the place. The families did not want their graves to be moved,” Mokoena said. Mokoena said the research showed that 99.9% of Marite residents voted in favour of the development.
He said the people who were situated where construction would take place would be moved to places of their choice
Norah Fakude, businesswoman involved in the project, said: “The demolishing of the old structures situated in the area has already started to allow the construction to take place.
“We are happy the government finally gave us the go-ahead. This is a huge project which will benefit the people of Marite and neighbouring areas.”
