Construction of the new Netcare Akeso Polokwane mental health facility is over 85% complete, with opening planned for early 2026 and major internal works underway.

POLOKWANE – Progress on the first phase of the new Netcare Akeso Polokwane mental health facility is progressing very well, and despite unforeseen delays, such as physical site conditions (hard rock) and inclement weather experienced at the beginning of the construction, the project is on track for completion with the anticipated opening during the first quarter 2026.

According to Jonita Steyl, spokesperson for the developer, Networth Properties, the overall progress of the construction is currently above 85% and the contractor is currently attending to the internal finishes which include final painting and floor finishes as well as the installation of joinery fittings.

Installation of signage, and specific loose equipment and furniture will take place this year.

Current external works entail the installation of paving and kerbs, and landscaping will commence shortly.

“The construction is currently at its peak in terms of resources, and there are approximately 342 workers on site. The developers, Networth Properties, are satisfied and proud to announce that the goals in terms of the involvement of local labour and local SMME’s and QSE’s have been realised.

The contractor, Raubex Building, recently achieved 319 763 exposure hours without any lost time injuries, which is a remarkable achievement,” Steyl reckoned and confirmed that the current practical completion is set for the beginning of December, whereafter the buildings will be handed over to Netcare Akeso to commence their fit-out.

The new facility is being developed in phases, with the first phase comprising 87 beds for inpatient admissions, including 15 adolescent beds, as well as 18 consulting rooms for doctors and allied professionals, providing a comfortable setting for outpatient mental health services.

Just 1.5km away from Netcare Pholoso Hospital, the chosen site allows for synergy between the new facility and the hospital’s level two trauma centre.

Designed for future expansion, its strategic location perfectly meets the growing mental healthcare needs of the provincial capital. Netcare Akeso Polokwane’s core team of experts will include psychiatrists, psychologists, occupational therapists and a social worker, supported by skilled and experienced nursing staff.

The land for the development was obtained from Polokwane Municipality in terms of a long-term development lease.
