The entire section of the national road near Ashburton will be closed from 8pm on May 16 to 5am on May 18. The closures will take place at the Lynnfield and Market Road interchange.

Motorists using the N3 are reminded to plan ahead and take note of the planned closure of the highway near Ashburton this weekend.

The entire section of the national road near Ashburton will be closed from 8pm on May 16 to 5am on May 18.

The South African National Roads Agency’s (Sanral) provincial specialist geometrics engineer, Jason Lowe, said the closures will take place at the Lynnfield and Market Road interchange.

Full closures will take place at the Lynnfield and Market Road interchange, with both the north-bound and south-bound traffic being unable to access the N3 during said times.

“The closures are due to the demolition of Ashburton Bridge on the N3 north and south-bound N3 construction process. The traffic accommodation team, with the assistance of the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI), will manage and monitor the diversion of traffic to the R103,” Lowe said.

The full road closures are proposed to take place as follows:

  • May 16 (8 pm to midnight): closure of N3 and start of demolition.
  • May 17 (midnight to midnight): full road closure
  • May 18 (midnight to 5am): complete breaking, cleaning and reopening of N3, allowing for traffic to flow.

The available alternative routes to traffic are:

  • Northbound traffic to be taken off at the Lynnfield off ramp onto R103 and back onto the N3 at Market Road intersection.
  • Southbound traffic to be taken off at the Market Road Interchange onto R103 and back onto the N3 at the Lynnfield intersection.
  • Pope Elis drive will be controlled via stop and go for residents only.

Sign boards will be implemented to show the direction of travel with flag personnel via the R103.

The closure may need to be adjusted depending on the weather conditions on the day.

Sanral will keep the travelling public updated on progress and changes to the above through further media statements. Motorists are urged to be patient while driving through the alternative routes, to plan and adjust their route trips ahead of time and to adhere to signage and speed limits.

“Sanral wishes to apologise to the motoring public for any inconvenience caused during the road closure. This is an unavoidable consequence of road improvements. Attempts have been made to minimise disturbances as far as possible and closures have been restricted to hours when traffic is at its lowest level,” Lowe said.
