Motorists are urged to plan ahead as the N2 fully closes in the first week of March to allow for the demolition of the old Wandsbeck Bridge.
Motorists travelling through Durban next month are advised to plan as the N2 will be fully closed for 34 hours to allow for the demolition of the old Wandsbeck Road bridge.
The temporary closure forms part of the ongoing upgrade of the EB Cloete interchange and surrounding road infrastructure.
The South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) confirmed that both the northbound and southbound carriageways of the N2 will be fully closed between the Inanda Road interchange and the EB Cloete interchange from 6 pm on Saturday, March 7, until 4 am on Monday, March 9.
The N3 will remain fully open during this period.
Sanral’s KwaZulu-Natal provincial office road safety specialist engineer, Jason Lowe, said the closure is necessary to safely demolish the old bridge structure.
“Where municipal roads, such as Wandsbeck Road, are affected by the N2 or N3 upgrades, the affected portions are built to match the city’s future planning, such as additional width or lanes are provided,” said Lowe.
Affected routes
On the N2 southbound (from King Shaka International Airport/Umhlanga towards Amanzimtoti), the carriageway will be fully closed at the Inanda interchange.
Vehicles will only be able to proceed to Umgeni Road and the M19.
On the N2 northbound from Amanzimtoti towards King Shaka International Airport, Umhlanga, the carriageway will be fully closed at the EB Cloete interchange.
Motorists will only be able to proceed onto the N3 east or west.
At the EB Cloete interchange:
- The N3 westbound off-ramp (Durban towards King Shaka International Airport) to the N2 north will be closed. Motorists may proceed to the N2 south or continue on the N3 towards Pinetown.
- The N3 eastbound off-ramp, Pinetown towards King Shaka International Airport, to the N2 north, will also be closed. Motorists may proceed to the N2 south or continue on the N3 towards Durban.
At the Inanda Road interchange, there will be no access to the N2 southbound towards Amanzimtoti. Vehicles can only proceed to Umgeni Road and the M19.
At the Umgeni Road (M19) interchange, traffic travelling east or west will have no access to the N2 southbound towards Amanzimtoti.
Sanral said full traffic accommodation plans will be in place to ensure the safety of road users and construction teams.
Trucks and heavy vehicles are advised to delay trips during the closure period, find suitable staging areas or use alternative routes to avoid major congestion.
Public transport operators have also been urged to inform drivers of the affected routes.
“To prioritise the safety of both the construction workers and road users, the speed limit along the route is reduced during construction,” Lowe said.
