MyCiTi expansion gets major court protection in Cape Town

The City of Cape Town has secured a final court interdict protecting the MyCiTi Cape Flats expansion from alleged extortion, intimidation and unlawful interference, Cape {town} Etc reports.

The Western Cape High Court granted the final interdict on 4 August 2026, with costs awarded to the City, according to the official MyCiTi statement.

The order applies to several individuals and members linked to the Philippi and Crossroads business forums. The City said the interdict aims to prevent interference with construction work forming part of the MyCiTi Cape Flats route expansion.

The ruling follows an interim interdict granted in 2025 after the City reported intimidation and alleged attempts to disrupt construction on the project. Cape Town Etc previously reported on that interim order in July 2025.

‘Extortion is a crime. Full stop. When people threaten workers, demand protection money or stop construction, it delays projects and prevents communities from getting the services and infrastructure they need. The finalisation of this court order is a major victory for the City’, said Mayoral committee member for Urban Mobility Rob Quintas.

Rob Quintas said the expansion would benefit more than 1.4 million residents across 30 neighbourhoods, including Mitchells Plain, Khayelitsha, Wynberg and Claremont.

The City said the interdict will help ensure construction can continue without unlawful disruption.

The MyCiTi Phase 2A expansion forms part of Cape Town’s wider public transport infrastructure programme, with construction taking place across the city’s south-eastern suburbs.
