The City of Cape Town has announced, via their website, upcoming lane closures and traffic adjustments along Govan Mbeki Road and Wetton Circle as construction work on the MyCiTi Phase 2A expansion continues.
On Tuesday, 28 October 2025, a temporary lane closure will take effect between Wetton Circle and Jan Smuts Drive to allow for the urgent relocation of underground municipal services, the City’s mayoral committee member for Urban Mobility, Rob Quintas, confirmed. Traffic between Wetton Circle and Low Road will be reduced to one lane in each direction, while two lanes in each direction will remain open between Low Road and the Jan Smuts intersection.
‘The works will regrettably add to congestion, but we ask that you always keep in mind the safe, affordable and reliable MyCiTi bus service that is coming your way, the public transport option we have all been waiting for along this corridor,’ said Quintas.
In addition, starting Thursday, 30 October 2025, a lane closure will be implemented from the Duinefontein Bridge to the Link Road intersections. This closure is expected to last approximately 13 months. Traffic heading eastbound towards the R300 will be diverted to the westbound lane, while only one lane in each direction along Govan Mbeki will remain open.

Quintas urged motorists to exercise patience and allow extra travel time during the construction period. ‘We will ensure that clear traffic signage is installed to guide road users through the area, but ask that road users please plan for longer journey times, if possible,’ he said.
The City reminded residents and commuters that these measures are part of the broader MyCiTi Phase 2A project, designed to enhance Cape Town’s public transport network and improve accessibility across the city.
