Construction is officially underway at Muizenberg’s famous Surfer’s Corner, kicking off one of the City of Cape Town’s most significant coastal refurbishment projects in years.

From Saturday, 4 October 2025, a section of the beach near the railway line has been temporarily closed to allow for the installation of a new dewatering system — part of a complete upgrade to the promenade’s stepped revetment as reported by IOL.

The main Muizenberg Beach remains open, ensuring that swimmers, surfers, and sunseekers can still enjoy the waves while the coastal works progress.

What’s changing at Surfer’s Corner

Led by the City’s Coastal Management Branch, the multi-phase project focuses first on the western section of the beachfront, adjacent to the railway line. Outdated seawalls, stone steps, and curved concrete barriers are being replaced with a modern, durable revetment designed to protect the shoreline from storm surges and rising sea levels.

The upgrade also introduces a three-metre-wide promenade and a universally accessible beach ramp, ensuring smoother access for everyone — from families with strollers to wheelchair users.

To help the new promenade blend with its surroundings, the concrete will feature a sandblasted sandstone finish, echoing the natural tones of Muizenberg’s coast.

A fresh look, built for the future

Beyond essential coastal defences, the project promises a refreshed, more inviting beachfront experience:

  • Upgraded parking areas along the railway line and Pavilion, replacing gravel sections.
  • Relocated and improved ablution facilities, featuring family-friendly and accessible amenities.
  • Local mosaic art celebrating Muizenberg’s surf and heritage culture, integrated into new structures.
  • A revamped children’s playground, reimagined with a kelp forest theme and interactive features.
  • The historic pergola, carefully rebuilt further inland to preserve its character while improving coastal protection.

Looking ahead

Construction began in February 2025, with phase one expected to reopen by December and the full project scheduled for completion by late 2026.

Visitors can view artist impressions and detailed plans along the beachfront, or scan on-site QR codes for project updates and insights into the design process.

When finished, Muizenberg’s Surfer’s Corner will blend heritage charm with modern resilience — ready to welcome the next generation of beachgoers, wave riders, and seaside strollers.
