Mayor Mzimkhulu Thebolla said the repairs formed part of a broader plan to improve roads leading to commercial hubs.
Road rehabilitation in Msunduzi has gathered pace, with construction vehicles at work and new tar laid across key routes this week, including the often-congested Roberts Road in Clarendon, which has undergone a much-needed makeover.
Mayor Mzimkhulu Thebolla said the repairs formed part of a broader plan to improve roads leading to commercial hubs.
“Whatever it is that investors need to make doing business in the area easier, we are facilitating,” he said.
He added that the upgraded roads would also benefit consumers, as improved access would make it easier to reach these areas.
Municipal spokesperson Ntobeko Mkhize previously told The Witness that the road rehabilitation programme was part of the City’s commitment to making 2025 the “Year of Service Delivery”.
“Major rehabilitation work is underway on Roberts Road and Taunton Road, which form part of key corridors into the city,” she said.
These are not just patch jobs; we are undertaking full road rehabilitation in sections where the damage was too severe for conventional repairs.
“Additional road work is taking place on Boom Street and Chatterton Road, among others.”
Mkhize acknowledged that the municipality had faced challenges in accelerating its road rehabilitation programme but reaffirmed the City’s drive to improve its roads.
“It is important to note that severe and persistent weather conditions in recent months delayed some of our earlier progress, requiring us to revisit and rework sections already addressed.
“Despite these setbacks, our teams have regrouped and intensified operations, armed with better resources, improved coordination, and a renewed sense of urgency,” she said.
Providing an update this week, Mkhize said work on some roads was nearing completion, with final touch-ups underway.
She added that new projects were in the pipeline and details of these, along with other upcoming initiatives, would be shared soon.
