THE community of Bakgatla Ba Kgafela in greater Moruleng, which comprises 32 villages, yesterday celebrated as the shopping mall they had been waiting for finally opened.
The mall is expected to create jobs for local youths.
Kgosi Nyalala Pilane said about 500 employment opportunities had been created during the construction phase and about 400 more permanent jobs were expected.
“The 109 villages that fall within the jurisdiction of the Moses Kotane local municipality are set to benefit immensely from this development,” he said.
“The transport industry, especially the taxi industry, is one of those who will reap the benefits from this project.”
Pilane said the mall could not have come at a better time.
“We are in a process of building a city and the pieces of the puzzle are gradually coming into place. This signals new beginnings in changing the lives of our communities for the better in terms of poverty alleviation, local economic development and growth, to name just a few.
“The mall forms part of the Moruleng city brand aimed at positioning Moruleng as an investment destination. We are working on projects such as the development of a CBD, the Moruleng Sports Complex, tribal offices, sewage treatment plant, residential complex, a hotel and improved road infrastructure.”
He said with over 80 shops, the mall would breathe new life into the region.
“It will provide a one-stop retail offering tailor made to the community’s needs in the region as well as neighbouring villages under the Moses Kotane local municipality.”
The official ribbon cutting ceremony will be held tomorrow and will be followed by a thanksgiving ceremony on Sunday.
