The Mogalakwena Local Municipality says it has its own plans and program for rehabilitating streets, and some streets have been left out because they are already included in the Social Labour Plan program by Anglo American Platinum’s Mogalakwena mine.

The municipality says it would be wasteful expenditure for the municipality to reseal the streets while they are already scheduled for rehabilitation.

The issue of potholes came to the spotlight over the weekend when Economic Freedom Fighters leader Julius Malema slammed the government for poor service during his address at an EFF member’s funeral service in Mahwelereng.

Municipal spokesperson Malesela Selokela says the municipality has collaborated with Mogalakwena mine to reseal six streets in town, including Geyser Street, Voor Street, Kruger Street, Retief Street, Dudu Madisha Drive and Bezeidenhout Street.

He has urged community members to stop damaging the newly rehabilitated roads by avoiding the construction of tents or other structures on the tar roads.
