The R28 million project is expected to ease travel and bring much-needed development to the area, which has long struggled with accessibility.
After years of enduring poor road conditions, Njobokazi residents under the Mkhambathini Municipality have finally seen their pleas to have their gravel road tarred answered.
Speaking to The Witness on Wednesday, Mayor Nhlakanipho Ntombela announced the completion of the newly tarred D72 road — an 8km stretch connecting Dontonto to Mgwaphuna.
The R28 million project is expected to ease travel and bring much-needed development to the area, which has long struggled with accessibility, particularly during heavy rains.
“We want to show people in rural areas that we care about them and that they deserve the same level of service as those in urban areas,” said Ntombela.
This road used to be a major challenge during the rainy season.
As part of the project, speed humps have been installed to enhance safety.
The construction also created jobs for 20 local residents, offering a short-term economic boost.
Ntombela reiterated the municipality’s commitment to rural development.
“When we came into office, we promised to prioritise tarring main roads in rural communities.
“With funding from the Department of Transport, we have also completed projects in Nkanyezini and the route from Emakholweni.
“Infrastructure development should not be confined to urban centres. Improved road networks enhance mobility and stimulate local economic growth.
“We hope the community will take ownership of this road and ensure it is preserved for future generations,” he said.
