Construction is near completion at the Umlaas Road junction, Old Main Road (Camperdown), R603, P418, New Fairview Road, and Bishop Road.

Camperdown is undergoing a major infrastructure revamp as part of Mkhambathini Municipality’s plan to transform the town into a “smart, green” investment hub.

Mayor Nhlakanipho Ntombela told The Witness that the improvements, including upgrades to several key roads and the construction of a traffic circle, aim to boost economic growth, improve road safety and present a cleaner, more modern face of Camperdown — just in time for the Comrades Marathon.

Construction is near completion at the Umlaas Road junction, Old Main Road (Camperdown), R603, P418, New Fairview Road, and Bishop Road.

We are working together with Sanral and Raubex as there is an upgrade on the N3. We appealed for R19 million from Sanral for the revamping of these roads.

“There was a possibility of major accidents as drivers were not patient with each other, and we deduced that constructing a traffic circle would be a solution.

“We tasked workers with refurbishing the main road that leads to the traffic circle, constructing walkways and installing traffic lights,” said Ntombela.

He added that they are trying to boost the local economy.

“If you have roads that are not in a good condition, it leads to the economy being unstable.

“We want people, as they enter [the area] to feel that they are in a clean and beautiful town.

“The project is nearing its completion.

“This revamp started in July 2024. Our wish is for these roads to be open [in time for] the Comrades Marathon,” he said.

Ntombela added that they are grateful to the community’s patience.

“We are doing this for them to drive their cars smoothly and safely. I always say that there are no potholes in Camperdown.

We also want our people to be able to benefit and get employment opportunities.

“We want to appeal to residents to make use of these opportunities.

“We are also pleading with them to protect this infrastructure.

“These developments are for you. You have a responsibility to take care of it,” Ntombela added.
