Residents in Milnerton can expect to see construction teams at work from the end of June as the City of Cape Town embarks on a major sewer rehabilitation project valued at more than R12 million.
The project, undertaken by the City's Water and Sanitation Directorate, will involve the rehabilitation of approximately 5.3 kilometres of ageing sewer pipelines across several parts of Milnerton.
Construction is scheduled to begin on Saturday, June 27 and is expected to continue until March next year.
According to the City, the work forms part of its ongoing investment in critical sanitation infrastructure and aims to improve the reliability of the sewer network while reducing the risk of future pipe failures.
A City-appointed contractor, JK Construction, will carry out the upgrades on sewer pipes ranging in size from 150mm to 300mm in diameter. Roads affected by the project include Oleander, Nerina, Mimosa, Lobelia, Keurboom, Graaff, Langerman Avenue, Ixia, Heather, Gousblom, Freesia, Erica Way, Ascot, Disa, Crasula, Gardenia Crescent and Bergonia Close.
The rehabilitation work will make use of both trenchless pipe replacement methods and traditional open-trench excavations, depending on conditions at each site.
Mayco member for water and sanitation, Zahid Badroodien, said the project forms part of the City's broader infrastructure investment programme.
"Under our current Integrated Development Plan, Cape Town is rolling out the most ambitious infrastructure investment programme in South Africa. This R12 million sewer rehabilitation in Milnerton is exactly what that looks like on the ground. We are systematically replacing vulnerable networks to prevent failures before they happen, safeguarding our communities and our environment. Thank you to the Milnerton residents for your patience as we execute this essential upgrade," he said.
Residents should expect temporary traffic disruptions during the construction period, including stop-and-go controls, lane restrictions and short-term road closures.
The City said every effort will be made to minimise inconvenience and maintain access to properties where possible.
Motorists and residents are urged to exercise caution near work areas and to follow all temporary traffic signage and safety instructions, said Badroodien.
