The municipality launched the first phase of the project in May as part of a broader plan to improve infrastructure and promote safe, accessible mobility for pedestrians and cyclists. The project includes preparing and paving the gravel shoulders along the route, installing kerbing, and laying commercial grade paving blocks.

According to the municipality, the footpath is expected to be completed by the end of June.

The initiative also aims to boost local job creation. Two local Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) were appointed to handle paving and kerb-laying, while six local labourers have been hired by the main contractor.
Once phase one is complete, a second phase—pending budget approval—is expected to extend the footpath to the Kookrus and Rothdene areas.

Several residents have welcomed the development, saying the footpath will improve safety and convenience.
The project is one of a number of infrastructure upgrades currently underway in Midvaal as part of its town revitalisation strategy.
