Big relief could soon be coming for Midrand drivers as the long-awaited K101 road upgrade heads toward completion.

There may finally be light at the end of the traffic tunnel for Midrand motorists as the long-awaited K101 road project approaches completion.

The major R500m infrastructure project, which is transforming a 5.4km stretch of the K101 into a dual carriageway, was initially scheduled for completion in March this year. However, spokesperson for the MEC for the Gauteng department of roads and transport Lesiba Mpya confirmed that the deadline was extended by one month due to route redesigns.

“The project was initially planned for completion in March 2026. However, due to redesigning of the route, an extension was granted for completion in April 2026. Therefore, the project will be completed in April 2026 and fully opened to traffic.”

The K101 road construction project was officially launched by Gauteng MEC for Transport and Logistics Kedibone Diale-Tlabela on October 28, 2022, as part of efforts to improve traffic flow and road infrastructure between the City of Johannesburg and the City of Tshwane.

It runs from D795 Road in Midrand to the N1 at Brakfontein Road, on the northern edge of Johannesburg and the southern edge of Tshwane.

The route is a key connector in the area and also serves as an important alternative to the often-congested N1 freeway.

The scope of the project includes the construction of three new bridges, the extension of the existing Rietspruit bridge, installation of traffic signals, and lighting along the full route.

Additional improvements include new drainage culverts, concrete side drains, sidewalks for pedestrians, and a cycle path along the western road reserve.

Mpya said that, aside from the route redesign, no further major changes were needed, and the department remains confident the project will be completed this year.

“Besides the redesigning, no improvements were required. The project is set for completion this year. The department wishes to thank motorists for their co-operation and understanding during the construction phase.”
