Construction work at the Pikitup Midrand depot in Rabie Ridge is gaining momentum, with JDA leading a major upgrade aimed at improving waste services, strengthening security, and creating local job opportunities.
Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA), on behalf of Pikitup, is making steady progress on the upgrade of the Midrand depot in Rabie Ridge.
This development includes building a reinforced boundary wall, installing a storm water management system, providing new water and sewer services, and constructing a modern guardhouse.
Once complete, the upgraded depot will improve security, enhance service infrastructure, and support Pikitup’s ability to manage refuse removal more effectively in the Midrand area.
Earlier this year, JDA partnered with Pikitup to roll out a series of infrastructure projects across Johannesburg, to improve refuse removal and promote sustainable waste management.
JDA spokesperson Kenneth Nxumalo said these projects fall under JDA’s public infrastructure delivery programme, which focuses on maximising investment in essential municipal infrastructure. “The programme ensures that waste management infrastructure is developed and delivered efficiently, in line with Johannesburg’s growth and environmental goals.”
Pikitup currently operates 12 waste depots, 44 garden refuse sites, and four active landfill sites across the city.
Beyond strengthening services, the project also brings direct benefits to the community. Nxumalo confirmed that five local labourers have already been appointed as part of JDA’s economic development programme, which promotes skills development, capacity-building, and community transformation through public works projects. “The project’s scope includes constructing a guardhouse, boundary wall, and platforms, widening Falcon and Stilt streets, storm water and sewerage reticulation, water reticulation, rehabilitation, and landscaping.”
With construction on track, Rabie Ridge and the surrounding communities can look forward to improved refuse removal services and a facility that better supports the city’s long-term environmental goals.
