The R40 million KwaNqetho Water Reservoir has been expanded, while plans are underway for a new reservoir in KwaNyuswa to improve water reliability.

The eThekwini Municipality has launched a series of multi-million-rand projects aimed at improving water security and road infrastructure in Durban's Outer West region.

Mayor Cyril Xaba officially unveiled the projects on Thursday.

Water supply improvements

They include the R40 million KwaNqetho Water Reservoir, with its capacity expanded from one megalitre to six megalitres to meet growing demand in the area.

Xaba says it was upgraded after a 2021 study found that the population of KwaNgcolosi had increased by more than 2 000 households.

He also announced plans for the construction of a new reservoir in KwaNyuswa, where communities continue to experience intermittent water supply.

Speaking during the unveiling, the mayor said a suitable site for the project has already been identified.

Xaba also opened a new 1.6km road which he says costs R1.6 million.

Housing development progress

"In ward 2, we are delivering in excess of 750 houses, which will be part of a huge housing development that will be close to 1 700.

"In ward 3, we have delivered close to 500 houses, part of another very huge rural housing programme, that will deliver in excess of 3 000 housing units.”
