Major roadworks begin for Tongaat Mall

BBB Properties co-owner Johan Botha said the roadworks will take about six months to complete and pleaded for community patience.

With the multi-million-rand oThongathi Mall scheduled to open its doors at the end of the year, major roadworks on the R102 around the mall are expected to begin next week Monday.

“The upgrade is expected to entail the narrowing of the R102 from three lanes to two in portions. All necessary traffic safety measures will be observed. The roadworks and upgrades along the R102 will be from Coronation Road to Ganie Street, and will also include a stretch of Wadd Place to the west of the R102.

Construction work is already well underway.

“It will also include the widening of the R102 Gopalall Hurbans Road in Tongaat’s central business district,” said Botha.

Construction of the mall was stopped in 2013 after a partial collapse killed two people and injured 29. Several obstacles since then saw the mall change ownership, while construction was also disrupted by legal conflicts.

In October, BBB Properties won an eight-month legal battle after the former building contractor refused to evacuate the site in the Tongaat CBD, despite the mall owners having cancelled the contract a year earlier.

It’s full steam ahead to get the project completed on time.

Four-hundred construction jobs have been created, with another 400 retail-related jobs in the offing once the mall opens.

The mall will accommodate about 60 shops, with Checkers, Ackermans, Pep and banks such as ABSA, FNB and Capitec among the anchor tenants.
