The upgrade will include additional lanes, realigned on- and off-ramps and modern traffic management systems.
The Devmco Group announced today that it will fund and develop a comprehensive upgrade of the M27 and M4 roads near Umdloti.
The project, undertaken in collaboration with the eThekwini Roads Authority, the KZN Transport Department and the South African National Roads Agency (Sanral), is set to begin construction next month.
The aim is to ease long-standing traffic congestion and improve safety in the area.
A contractor has already been appointed, and preliminary works are under way.
James Timcke, development manager at Devmco Group, said the strategic investment would benefit both the company’s developments and the wider community.
“Devmco Group is proud to be leading this important infrastructure upgrade,” said Timcke.
“It not only supports our developments but also delivers long-term benefits to the greater community.”
The M27 and M4 interchange, along with the exit and entrance at Salta Boulevard, has long been a source of frustration for commuters and residents.
Umdloti local Darryn van Vreden described the situation as increasingly hazardous.
“Traffic congestion is terrible; it has been for years,” said Van Vreden.
“People do not slow down, they speed up to get through the interchanges, which has caused accidents. When you wait to cross at the M4 interchange, motorists come cruising in the emergency lane, which is dangerous because you cannot see them.”
The upgrade will include additional lanes, realigned on- and off-ramps and modern traffic management systems. Key features include teardrop traffic circles at the N2 interchange, new traffic lights at the M4 interchanges and improved access to Salta Boulevard.
“These improvements are designed to alleviate congestion, improve traffic flow and ensure safer, more efficient access to one of the North Coast’s fastest-growing precincts,” said Timcke.
Preliminary work includes the proving and relocation of underground services, as well as the completion of Heleza Boulevard.
“Our partnership with the relevant road authorities ensures that this investment creates a sustainable and future-ready transport network for the North Coast,” he said.
The project is expected to be completed within 12 months.
