The project commenced more than eight months ago, however, little progress is reflected.
For more than eight months, a section of the R102 from the Mzimkhulu River bridge to Rethman Drive, Umtentweni, has been undergoing major rehabilitation.
To many residents and business owners, an upgrade was necessary and the KZN Department of Transport (DoT) took on the project to improve infrastructure, while repair work on the bridge is under way.
The closure from the bridge to Rethman Drive is expected to last until February 15, 2026. Meanwhile traffic is being diverted via Link Road for light motor vehicles and Commercial Road for heavy motor vehicles.
At a meeting held at Ray Nkonyeni Municipality council chambers last Sunday, an update was provided on progress.
Nazir Shaikh, the chairperson of the North Cluster Ratepayers’ and Residents’ Association said work on the R102 was seriously delayed. “Unfortunately, we are way behind. The work progress is only at 8% completed. The contractors have been on site for eight-and-a-half months and all one can observe is that the upper layer of the tar was removed and replaced with a layer of concreate stones.”
He added that there is concern as many were informed that the single lane on the bridge will open on Sunday (7th). Motorists have to travel on gravel road with a stop-and-go system.
The R102 rehabilitation is been undertaken by Jamjo Civils (Pty) Ltd, on behalf of DoT. The 17km stretch between the Mzimkhulu bridge and Umzumbe River bridge is expected to be completed by March 2027.
