Rustenburg – Motorists in Rustenburg and the surrounding areas can look forward to smoother and safer journeys as Bakwena N1N4 continues its large-scale road upgrade and maintenance programme.
We first reported on this massive project when it kicked off in March 2024. The R1.33 billion upgrade between the Buffelspoort and Dr Moroka interchanges is now well underway, part of a 43-month contract to expand the roadway to two lanes in each direction. The aim is to ease congestion, improve travel times, and strengthen road safety.
Investment in safer, smoother roads
In 2024 alone, Bakwena invested R300 million into its roads. Now, with an additional R600 million set aside for projects beginning later this year, the company continues to reinforce its commitment to road-user safety and better driving conditions.
While nationwide projects include upgrades on the N1 between Pretoria’s Proefplaas Interchange and Pumulani, and rehabilitation of the N4 from Zeerust to the Botswana border, Rustenburg and surrounds will continue to see significant construction activity in the months ahead.
Travel advice for motorists
With roadworks active, delays are possible. Lane closures and stop/go systems will be used to manage traffic flow, although Bakwena assures motorists that peak-time lanes will remain open to minimise disruption.
“We thank our communities and motorists for their patience and cooperation as we undertake these vital improvements to ensure safer and more efficient travel,” said Solly Kganyago, Bakwena COO.
