Sanral said the closures are necessary to support ongoing improvements to the EB Cloete Interchange, one of the busiest and most complex interchanges in the country.
Motorists using the N2 northbound between the Edwin Swales (M7) and EB Cloete interchanges are warned to expect full road closures and major delays next weekend.
The road closures, from November 29 to 30, form part of construction on the flyover upgrade linking Durban’s CBD to King Shaka International Airport.
The South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) said the closures are required to support upgrade works at the EB Cloete Interchange, one of the country’s busiest and most complex junctions.
“This closure is part of the ongoing progress in the upgrade of the EB Cloete Interchange and surrounding bridges,” said Jason Lowe, Sanral’s KZN Specialist Geometrics Engineer.
Closure schedule
Closure 1: N2 northbound at M7/Edwin Swales Interchange
The closure will take place from 6 pm on Saturday, November 29, to 2 am on Sunday, November 30
- Full closure of N2 northbound at the Edwin Swales off-ramp.
- All traffic will be diverted onto the M7.
- The N2 on-ramp from the M7 will also be closed.
Closure 2: N2 northbound at EB Cloete Interchange
The closure will take place from 2 am to 6 pm on Sunday, November 30
- N2 northbound is closed at the Durban CBD and Pinetown off-ramp.
- Closure applies only between the EB Cloete on- and off-ramps for through traffic.
- All ramps remain open, and the N2 north of EB Cloete will not be affected.
Sanral has published a detailed alternative route guide, available on its website.
As with all major construction work, full traffic accommodation plans and detour signage will be in place. Sanral has warned motorists to expect delays, reduce speed, and follow all posted signage when moving through construction zones.
“Sanral appeals to road users to note and comply with the warning signs and speed restrictions when travelling past the construction work zones,” Lowe said.
He added that speed limits would be temporarily reduced to protect both drivers and construction crews.
Heavy vehicles and long-distance truckers are advised to delay travel where possible or make use of designated staging areas to avoid severe congestion. Public transport operators have also been urged to ensure drivers are aware of the closures and alternate routes.
