Motorists can expect safer roads and smoother commutes as Bakwena prepares to launch a wave of N1 and N4 rehabilitation projects.

Bakwena has announced a series of upcoming road maintenance and rehabilitation projects along its N1/N4 route, reaffirming its commitment to safer and more efficient travel for motorists.

In 2024, the concessionaire invested about R300-million in construction and maintenance along the corridor stretching from Bela-Bela on the N1 South through Pretoria, and west along the N4 to the Botswana border.

Building on this investment, the organisation confirmed it will roll out a further R600-million in projects set to commence in the last quarter of this year.

“Road safety and reliable infrastructure remain our top priorities,” said Bakwena COO, Solly Kganyago. “These projects are essential in ensuring the N1/N4 continues to serve both local and cross-border commuters efficiently.”

Bakwena is currently undertaking a R1.33-billion upgrade of the N4 between Buffelspoort and Dr Moroka interchanges in Rustenburg.

In addition, two new rehabilitation projects have been awarded:

– N1 Proefplaas Interchange to Pumulani Main Line Plaza: A R276-million contract has been awarded to Roadmac Surfacing for a 15-month project that began preparation in August. Construction is scheduled from October this year to November 2026. Work will include pavement reconstruction, crack sealing and overlaying. Lane closures will be managed to keep all lanes open during peak hours.

– N4 Zeerust to Botswana border: The second project, also awarded to Roadmac Surfacing, is valued at R324-million. Following a three-month site establishment from September, construction will run from January 2026 until June 2027. Full-depth pavement reconstruction and overlays will be undertaken, with 5km lane closures in each direction controlled by stop/go systems.

While acknowledging possible disruptions, Bakwena has urged motorists to exercise patience.

“We thank our communities and motorists for their patience and co-operation as we undertake these vital improvements to ensure safer and more efficient travel,” Kganyago added.
