The City of Johannesburg's MMC for Human Settlements, Cllr Mlungisi Mabaso, accompanied by the Speaker of Council, Cllr Margaret Arnolds, officially broke ground on Phase 4 of the Riverside View Social Housing Development in Region A.
The ceremony, held on Tuesday, 22 July 2025 in Fourways, marks a major milestone in the City's efforts to expand access to safe, affordable rental housing.
Implemented by the Johannesburg Social Housing Company, this flagship project is a vital part of the City's mission to provide quality accommodation for low- to moderate-income households. It also supports local job creation and women-led businesses through the Expanded Public Works Programme.
Phases 1 and 2 were completed in September 2023, while Phase 3, launched in 2024, added 184 units. Phase 4 is the final stage of the development and will deliver a further 744 units. This phase is backed by R53 million from the City and an additional R291 million from the Social Housing Regulatory Authority's Consolidated Capital Grant.
The construction will consist of 1-bedroom (30m²) and 2-bedroom (40m²) units at the following sites:
- Erf 2864: 64 units, due by April 2026
- Erf 2869: 320 units, expected by June 2026
- Erf 2569: 188 units, construction starts September 2025, completion by November/December 2026
- Erf 4197: 172 units, construction starts September 2025, completion by November/December 2026
The Riverside View project aligns with the City's strategic goals to deliver inclusive, dignified, and integrated human settlements across Johannesburg.
