Spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said the slight delays are due to unforeseen logistical challenges regarding unidentified infrastructure and services from years ago.

The integrated public transport network upgrades on Lynnwood and Atterbury roads in the east of Pretoria have been experiencing delays, according to the metro.

Spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said the slight delays are due to unforeseen logistical challenges regarding unidentified infrastructure and services from years ago.

“These delays, though regrettable, are being addressed promptly to minimise their impact on the overall timeline. We are working closely with all stakeholders to ensure that any issue is swiftly resolved,” said Mashigo.

The R146.8-million upgrades to improve both the road network and non-motorised transport infrastructure are set to promote sustainable modes of transportation. In general, there will be a better flow of traffic and pedestrians.

Mashigo said the project’s expected outcome is to significantly enhance the efficiency and accessibility of the public transport network in the east of Pretoria.

“By improving signal timing and traffic flow at key intersections, commuters can expect reduced travel times and smoother journeys.”

He said additional bus rapid transit (BRT) routes would promote sustainable modes of transportation.

“In general, there will be a better movement of traffic and pedestrians,” he said.

He said the intersection upgrades primarily focus on improving signal timing and traffic flow at three key intersections identified as problem areas in the east.

“Additionally, non-motorised transport infrastructure projects are being planned to enhance pedestrian and cyclist safety, including the implementation of lanes and improved crossing facilities.”

He said the Lynnwood and University, Lynnwood and Roper, Lynnwood and Atterbury, and Atterbury and Justice Mahomed intersections will all be upgraded to accommodate the BRT lanes.

He said the non-motorised transport infrastructure will have sidewalks which are now widened to an average width of 2.5m to 3m. It will also include cycle lanes.

Masigo said the Justice Mahomed and Atterbury intersection and the King’s Highway Culvert are currently under construction, with significant progress on various components, including intersection upgrades and non-motorised transport infrastructure enhancements.

“Lynnwood and Atterbury, and Lynnwood and Roper intersection [upgrades] will start as soon as possible.”

Mashigo acknowledged that construction has been causing traffic disruptions.

“We understand the importance of minimising disruption for both traffic and pedestrians during the construction phase.”

He said to achieve this, a comprehensive traffic management plan has been put in place, including the provision of alternative routes and the scheduling of construction activities during off-peak hours wherever possible, though this is not always possible.

“Additionally, clear signage and communication strategies are employed to inform the public about any temporary change or diversion. There is an approved traffic management plan in place that is monitored daily, especially during peak hours.

Traffic movement is not a problem at Kings Highway Culvert and Atterbury/Justice Mahomed intersection.”

Mashigo said the budget for these projects has been carefully allocated to cover all necessary expenses while maintaining fiscal responsibility and transparency.

“Robust financial management practices are implemented to ensure the project remains within budget. Regular monitoring and cost-control mechanisms are in place to track expenditure and identify any deviation from the budgeted allocation.”

In May 2023 the metro also launched a R124-million road project to expand Lynnwood Road for a BRT service to connect the city to Mamelodi.

The project is expected to be completed in 18 months.

The metro said the project was vital for the alleviation of traffic congestion, improving road safety and enhancing overall mobility throughout the city.
