Construction on the R650 million GrandWest Mall is set to begin this month following the official transfer of land to a joint venture between Flanagan & Gerard Property Group and GrandWest, a subsidiary of Sun International, reports Cape {town} Etc.

The 22 000m² convenience-focused shopping centre is expected to open in June 2027 and will form part of the wider GrandWest entertainment precinct.

More than 70% of the mall’s gross lettable area has already been secured, with additional space currently under offer, as leasing momentum continues ahead of construction.

The development will include:

  • Checkers FreshX
  • Halaal SuperSpar
  • Dis-Chem
  • Clicks
  • Retailers from Mr Price Group, Truworths Group and Pepkor.

A key feature of the mall will be its direct integration with GrandWest’s entertainment zone, including Magic Company, Ten Pin Bowling and nearby family restaurants such as Panarottis, Ocean Basket and RocoMamas. The design aims to connect retail, dining and leisure into a single destination experience.

Chris Teague of Flanagan & Gerard said the transfer marks an important milestone for the project. ‘The completed transfer unlocks the next phase of development. We are excited to see the mall rise and take shape,’ he said.

GrandWest General Manager Mervyn Naidoo said the development strengthens the precinct’s broader appeal.

‘The addition of GrandWest Mall will broaden our offering and create a day-to-night destination for families and visitors,’ he said.

Sun International Chief Operations Officer for Hospitality & Sales, Nomzamo Radebe, said the development supports the group’s long-term vision for the precinct.

‘Including bespoke community retail within the GrandWest precinct is strategically important. It strengthens our leisure and hospitality offering and supports our vision of GrandWest as a leading integrated destination,’ she said.
