The Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA), on behalf of Pikitup Johannesburg (SOC) Ltd, is making steady progress on infrastructure upgrades at the Linbro Park Landfill Site, with major milestones achieved in both Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the project. The project forms part of the City of Johannesburg's broader efforts to strengthen waste management infrastructure, improve environmental compliance, and support more efficient, sustainable landfill operations.

Phase 1, which includes the construction of sorting facilities, stormwater infrastructure and supporting operational works, has reached 78% overall physical completion.

This phase includes sorting facilities for reclaimers, stormwater and sewer reticulation infrastructure, electrical upgrades, a fire engineering tank and pumphouse, ablution and canteen facilities, access roads, and other supporting infrastructure.

Additional works currently underway include:

  • Installation of structural steel in Facility 4
  • Construction of sewer manholes and stormwater grids
  • Installation of underground electrical sleeves
  • Tiling and ceiling installation within ablution and canteen facilities
  • Electrical works within the Pikitup Main Offices have also been successfully completed.

Phase 2 of the Linbro Park Landfill Site project is also progressing steadily and has reached 52% overall completion. It focuses on upgrading the sorting facility and stormwater management infrastructure. It also includes demolishing existing structures, constructing a new perimeter and retaining wall, installing new paving and access infrastructure, building new staff offices, extending water and sewer reticulation, installing new access gates, and developing a new security guardhouse.

Current progress highlights include:

  • Site establishment completed at 100%
  • Foundations for walls and buildings completed at 100%
  • Stormwater management works at 54%
  • New perimeter and retaining wall at 56%
  • New paving works at 48%
  • New staff offices at 46%

JDA spokesperson said the project reflects the City's commitment to modernising waste management infrastructure while improving operational efficiency and environmental sustainability.

“The Linbro Park Landfill Site project is a critical investment in Johannesburg's waste management infrastructure. Through these upgrades, the City is improving operational functionality, strengthening environmental management systems, and creating infrastructure that supports sustainable service delivery for residents," said the JDA spokesperson.

The project is also contributing to local economic development through job opportunities and the participation of local contractors and suppliers. The JDA remains committed to delivering infrastructure that supports a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable Johannesburg.
