R6m was allocated to road maintenance for the current financial year, which ends on February 28.

The Lekwa Local Municipality has been working to fix several stretches of road across town since January 6. According to Lubabalo Majenge, spokesperson for the LLM, three main roadwork projects are currently underway in Lekwa.

He explained that the municipality is currently rehabilitating 1.2km of road on Hlongwane Drive, adding new gravel to the main access road to Khunjuliwe School, and performing routine pothole patching as part of daily maintenance.

According to Majenge, R6m was allocated to road maintenance for the current financial year, which ends on February 28.

“The municipality is committed to maintaining its roads and infrastructure despite having limited resources,” stated Majenge.
Road maintenance remains part of the municipality’s ongoing infrastructure improvements.

Though maintenance is underway in several areas, many stretches of road still require work. Swickard Street, one of the main access roads to the Standerton Police Station, has been dilapidated.

Caledon Street, a busy area with both residential and commercial properties, has also shown signs of decay, with massive potholes forming on nearly every side of the road.

Another example of road restoration that desperately needs to be done is the repaving of the access road to the Oriental complex in Stanwest.

Many business owners feel disadvantaged by the state of their roads. They have stated that the roads are difficult to access, and they are losing valuable customers as a result.
