Bridge City Shopping Centre in KwaMashu, KwaZulu-Natal, has officially reopened following its closure as a result of extensive damage and looting in the nationwide riots during July 2021.
Owned by the Futuregrowth Community Property Fund (Comprop), the 40 000m2 regional shopping centre is managed by Capital Land Asset Management. It originally opened in 2019 in the centre of Bridge City, a mixed-use precinct which connects the communities of Phoenix, Inanda, Ntuzuma and KwaMashu and it was developed with the objective of stimulating economic growth and empowering its surrounding communities through improved access to public transport, employment, services, and retail offerings.
The damage sustained to Bridge City Shopping Centre resulted in its full closure and internal reconstruction.
The enclosed, double level regional retail asset boasts anchor tenants Shoprite, SuperSpar and Woolworths positioned on each end. The tenant mix has been boosted through strategic placement of existing and new tenants as well as the establishment of fashion nodes, a banking hall on the upper level, and a food court on the lower level. Free Wi-Fi facilities are available throughout the building.
Its new contemporary aesthetics are modern and light, inspired by its location and use as a transport hub in KwaMashu. Railway sleeper and track details are prominent in the ceiling and floor tile design throughout the shopping centre.
