CAPE TOWN – The City of Cape Town’s long-awaited Kommetjie Road upgrades are entering their final phase, with completion targeted for 31 December this year.
The project, which started on Monday 24 March, has experienced unforeseen delays that extended the project timeline.
The City was upgrading the road between the Capri Drive and Wood Road intersections, just past Masiphumelele.
Once complete, the additional lanes will alleviate the peak-period congestion for commuters travelling between Kommetjie, Ocean View, Imhoff’s Gift, Heron Park, Masiphumelele, Sunnydale and beyond.
If all goes as planned the west-bound road lanes will be opened some time in December. The completion of all road markings will also occur in December 2025. The temporary road-closure barricades at Corfu Road and the Food Zone entrance/exit will be removed in the coming weeks.
The City had initially hoped to finish the project by the end of September 2025, People’s Post reported in April.
Progress to date
- A boundary wall was relocated to make way for the road widening on the west-bound lane.
- Underground services were relocated to accommodate the project works.
- The road resurfacing on the east-bound lanes was completed.
- The road layer works for the road widening on the west-bound lane, including kerbing and asphalt surfacing are currently being finalised.
Official response
Mayco member for Urban Mobility Rob Quintas acknowledged community frustration while the upgrades are underway.
“First and foremost, I want to thank the residents and road users in the Kommetjie area for their continued patience throughout the Kommetjie Road widening and upgrade project,” he said.
“We completely understand the frustration caused by the unforeseen delays and the current congestion in the area, particularly during peak periods. Unfortunately, we encountered unforeseen challenges and delays on site, which is common for many road projects.”
Road upgrade goals
Improving the capacity along the east-bound lanes and at the intersections and entry points to Masiphumelele at Chasmay Road, Pokela Road and Lekkerwater Road.
Maintain continuity of cycle lanes along Kommetjie Road and through major intersections to accommodate and encourage cycling as a viable mode of transport in the valley during commuter peak periods.
Accommodate public transport stops.
Traffic control
The contractor will apply interventions to improve traffic flow as best as possible during the remaining work period, the City added.
The traffic management and the operational deployments of traffic enforcement will now be handled by separate units to prevent any additional congestion over the next few weeks.
Upgrades will continue during the builders’ break to complete the critical infrastructure upgrade before the new year, the City’s Urban Mobility Directorate announced.
The City asks that motorists and pedestrians avoid the Kommetjie Road, which is off-limits for the remainder of the construction period for safety reasons.
