The long-closed Kempton Park Swimming Pool is finally undergoing major upgrades, with Phase 1 expected to be completed by the end of December and the facility edging closer to reopening.

After more than five years out of service, the Kempton Park Swimming Pool is set to reopen soon.

The Kempton Express visited the facility on November 7 and found construction workers revamping the pool.

In a January 9 article, Ward Clr Jaco Terblanche confirmed that included in the upgrade would be the main and children’s pools.

“The planned upgrade includes work on the main and the children’s pools. Structural cracks in both need significant remedial work,” Terblanche said.

According to the CoE, the pool has been out of service since 2018.

A budget of R18m was allocated for the revamp, spanning the 2024/25 to 2026/27 financial years.

The appointed contractor, Olanga Trading, took over the construction site on May 16.

Ekurhuleni spokesperson Zweli Dlamini explained that the project has two phases. Phase 1 is underway and expected to be completed by December 31.

Phase 2 will start between the third and fourth quarters of the current financial year and continue into the 2026/27 financial year.

The exact dates have still to be confirmed.

“The pool will become operational upon completion of Phase 2 of the upgrades and is expected to have a functional lifespan exceeding 20 years,” Dlamini said.
