KwaZulu-Natal Public Works and Infrastructure MEC Martin Meyer says that his department will take steps to ensure transparency in the procurement of goods and services in the province.
He says that his department will introduce a new tender procurement system.
The province has been battling the challenges of the construction mafia, who extort money from those working on new projects.
Meyer says in the new system all tenders issued will be conducted on both audio and video, failure of which the tender will be nullified.
He says, “Almost every tender that this department puts out, we get an appeal, it has to go through all the appeals process and it ends up in court quite often, and that slows down our service delivery same with applications for senior posts. That’s why we decided, we need to make sure that there is transparency, it’s very important for the new government of unity.”
“But also that the system is monitored, so that if there’s appeals, we can very quickly get what really happened, that will speed up any processes, and it’s also there to protect everyone. It’s there to protect the officials of the department from false allegations, but also there to protect tenders, and the public whose tax money we are responsible for spending,” adds Meyer.
