At least 1 200 repairs targeted for Region B in the war on potholes programme.

Johannesburg’s Executive Mayor Sello Dada Morero has officially declared a war on potholes as part of the city’s high-impact service delivery programme, an effort to fix Johannesburg’s battered roads and improve daily commutes for residents.

“We are declaring war on potholes,” said the mayor. “This is about restoring dignity, fixing what’s broken, and creating the Johannesburg we all want. Our roads are critical to the city’s economy and people’s daily lives, so, we are taking action where it’s needed most.”
The programme launched on July 10 in Hyde Park and marks the start of a focused, month-long intervention that will extend to all Ward 90 areas, including Rosebank, Auckland Park, and other key routes in Region B.

According to the statement, Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) has identified around 1 200 outstanding potholes in the area that require urgent repair.

“As of July, Ward 90 still has 1 149 potholes waiting to be fixed, with further patching and reinstatements planned, while Ward 117 has another 58 potholes to be addressed.”

To deliver on this commitment, JRA has already deployed regional operations teams to assess problem areas and develop a multi-pronged action plan.

“Depot managers and inspectors have been on-site,” said Morero, “carrying out detailed road checks to guide our maintenance strategy.”
