The primary challenge for Johannesburg Water was the complexity of working on infrastructure integrated with a highway bridge.
Houghton Estate, Melrose, and Rosebank residents are finally out of the woods after continuous water interruptions due to the M1 bridge pipe repairs.
Last month, the M1 bridge had a leak, which not only obstructed traffic, but turned into a flood, affecting Glenhove Road and Central Street.
Johannesburg Water conducted an emergency briefing for a specialised contractor, who worked on the complex pipe for two consecutive weekends, fixing it and ending the flood.
A reporter visited the complete and backfilled site on September 22. While the repairs are complete, the site is still heavily barricaded, due to the leftover rubble, and Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) is due to be onsite soon to undertake the required tar reinstatement.
