After 18 months of water streaming down Pritchard Street, damaging roads and endangering motorists, Johannesburg Water has finally stepped in.

After more than a year of frustration for Fourways residents, Johannesburg Water (JW) has finally begun work to repair a major water leak and excavation site on Pritchard Street.

The leak, which has been left unattended for 18 months, saw water streaming into Witkoppen Road, damaging the road surface, creating potholes, and posing a safety hazard to motorists and pedestrians.

Previously commenting on the inquiry, JW spokesperson Puleng Mopeli confirmed that the problem stemmed from a damaged 350mm asbestos-cement pipe that required specialised repair materials not readily available. “The sourcing process is now at an advanced stage.

We recognise the seriousness of the leak and the potential hazards it may pose. The team is prioritising this repair and is working to resolve it as quickly as possible to minimise risk to the surrounding community.”

Ward 115 councillor Mark van der Merwe, who has consistently raised concerns and followed up about the leak, welcomed the long-overdue action, but emphasised that the community had been left in the dark for too long. “Residents have had to live with water running down the street and the constant deterioration of our roads. This should never have taken 18 months.”

Van der Merwe also advised residents to use alternative routes, as JW closed the lower part of Pritchard Street while repairs are underway.
